During menopause, the ovaries cease to produce the hormones estrogen and progesterone, leading to various symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes, and sleep disturbances. The transition to menopause, known as perimenopause, can start several years before the last period and is characterised by irregular periods and other menopausal symptoms.
